Washington, D.C. – Today, Rep. Filemon Vela (TX-34) and House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs Chairman Mark Takano met with Rio Grande Valley veterans to recognize their commitment to our country and to learn more about the broad scope of needs existing within the veteran community. Representative Vela and Chairman Takano met with VA Healthcare Center personnel and with Veteran Service Organizations based in the valley. Together, these members of the Rio Grande Valley community aim to offer veterans a variety of resources including health care services, career services, peer support, and community engagement.

“As a Member of the Armed Services Committee, our military – active duty and veterans – is a top priority,” said Vela. “Through our meetings in the district, Chairman Takano and I were reminded of the great work and contributions veterans continue to provide to our nation and to one another. I’m inspired by their unwavering commitment to improving the quality of life of all veterans in the community.”

“After my home state of California, Texas has the second-highest concentration of veterans. As Chairman of the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, it’s a privilege to visit the Rio Grande Valley and see first-hand how this population is so deeply woven into this community and how they utilize VA services,” said Takano.

“We appreciate Congressman Vela inviting Chairman Takano to the area to listen to concerns namely from Veteran Females United,” said Angela Burton, president of Veteran Females United (VFU). “We were able to congratulate him on the Deborah Sampson Act which establishes an office of women’s health. A couple of local issues discussed were the need for additional mental health providers and extended clinic hours at the local veterans’ facility.”

VFU’s mission is to engage and empower female veterans to lead healthy successful lives by providing ongoing guidance and support to them and their families.

“It shows that Congressman Vela and Chairman Takano really care about the veterans and their issues,” said Tony Garcia, chief executive officer of Warriors United In Arms Brownsville Veterans. “When the congressman tells us he’s going to do something, it gets done. He delivers what he promises.”

Warriors United in Arms Brownsville Veterans is a veteran’s services organization committed to helping those in need while advocating for fair and equal conditions for everybody in Brownsville.
