Austin, TX- Last week, Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan appointed Representative Sergio Muñoz, Jr. to the Windstorm Insurance Legislative Funding and Funding Structure Oversight Board. This board provides oversight for the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association (TWIA) and is tasked with studying TWIA’s current funding structure as well as looking in to how the catastrophic risk pools of other states operate. The purpose of this committee is to provide recommendations and proposals for establishing and implementing sustainable funding and a sustainable funding structure for TWIA.

“I would like to thank Speaker Phelan for entrusting me with this opportunity to better advocate for the sufficient, adequate, and affordable coverage for so many of our Texas residents,” stated Representative Muñoz. “Due to the region in which they are located, windstorm and hail coverage can be cost-prohibitive for these homeowners. I am ready to begin my work on this board to ensure that our Texas homeowners are covered in their time of need, especially after a natural disaster.”

The Texas Windstorm Insurance Association (TWIA) was created by the Texas Legislature in 1971 to ensure the availability and affordability of insurance along the Texas Gulf Coast, a region of the state most vulnerable to hurricanes and other natural disasters. TWIA provides last resort windstorm and hail coverage to residents in Aransas, Brazoria, Calhoun,
Cameron, Chambers, Galveston, Jefferson, Kenedy, Kleberg, Matagorda, Nueces, Refugio, San Patricio, Willacy counties as well as part of Harris County.
