WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-34) voted to pass S. 4367, the Thomas R. Carper Water Resources Development Act of 2024(WRDA), which contains two key provisions for the 34th Congressional District of Texas.
The first provision authorizes $40 million for the City of Brownsville for water and wastewater infrastructure development. While funding has yet to be allocated, this marks a significant step forward in addressing the city’s infrastructure needs.
The second provision highlights the importance of Resaca Restoration in Brownsville and directs the Secretary of the Army to evaluate state and local partners’ ability to pay for key projects.
“Passing the Water Resources Development Act will create a safer and more resilient South Texas,” said Congressman Gonzalez. “Our region faces frequent flooding and persistent droughts. The provisions in the bipartisan WRDA bill are an important step in helping Brownsville address these issues.”
“We are grateful for the passage of the Water Resources Development Act of 2024, which will improve our water and wastewater infrastructures,” said Marilyn D. Gilbert, General Manager & CEO of the Brownsville Public Utilities Board (BPUB). “We thank Congressman Vicente González for his leadership in securing essential funding as well as federal support for projects like the Resaca Restoration and Falcon Lake, to make certain we can better serve the greater Brownsville area for generations to come.’’
Earlier this year, Congressman Gonzalez submitted the provisions through the Member priority provisions process for the Water Resources Development Act. This system allows Members of Congress to directly advocate for their districts’ unique needs.
