HARLINGEN, Texas – Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-34) announced an additional $5 million in federal funding for the new air traffic control tower currently under construction at Valley International Airport.

Congressman Gonzalez secured an initial $4.5 million for phase 1 of the project in February of this year. Funding for both grants were allocated through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law’s Airport Terminal Program, which Congressman Gonzalez supported in 2021, to improve outdated airport infrastructure. The additional $5 million grant will fund a portion of phase 2, which includes utility relocation and interior construction.

“This funding will ensure Valley International Airport can continue construction on its air traffic control tower,” said Congressman Gonzalez. “Air traffic control towers serve as the command hub for any airport, allowing skilled air traffic controllers to direct takeoffs and landings with precision while passengers and crew remain safe. The new tower will increase the airport’s operational efficiency, promote safety in our skies, and enhance the quality of travel for South Texans.”

“We’re incredibly grateful to Congressman Gonzalez for always having Harlingen and Valley International Airport’s best interests at heart,” said Norma Sepulveda, Mayor of the City of Harlingen. “This $5 million grant through the FY 2025 Airport Terminal Program is more than just funding – it’s a crucial step in making sure our airport is safe, accessible, and ready for the future. With this support, we can address important issues at the FAA Contract Tower and keep moving forward with construction. This project strengthens not only the airport but also the growth and opportunities for our entire community.” We’re incredibly grateful to Congressman Gonzalez for always having Harlingen and Valley International Airport’s best interests at heart.
