Washington, D.C.– Today, Congressman Henry Cuellar (TX-28) voted to secure twelve weeks of paid parental leave for all federal civilian employees in the 2020 National Defense Authorization Act (FY20 NDAA). This will be the first major benefit expansion for federal employees since the Family and Medical Leave Act was passed in 1993.
“The federal government too often leaves families no choice but to return to work days after bringing their new child home,” said Congressman Cuellar. “As the nation’s largest employer, we need to set an example and provide paid parental leave for civil servants and their families. The provision in the NDAA will improve workforce retention, children’s health outcomes, and parents’ ability to bond with their children. I will continue to fight for the health and economic well-being of hardworking American families.”
The paid parental leave provided under this bill will be separate from civilian annual or sick leave. Civilian employees must be employed with the federal government for 12 months before they are eligible for this benefit. The parental leave must be used within a 12-month period upon the birth of the child.
