Washington, D.C. – Congressman Henry Cuellar (TX-28) issues the following statement on the passage of the GI Bill Flexibility for Student Veterans, S. 3503. Due to schools temporarily closing or transitioning to online classes, this legislation helps student veterans by giving the VA authority to continue paying GI Bill payments and monthly housing allowances at existing rates.
“Today, partisanship was put aside, and the House came together to pass the GI Bill Flexibility for Student Veterans, protecting more than 500,000 GI Bill students. The coronavirus pandemic is affecting all communities and it is critical that we put forth our best effort in defending those who have risked everything for our country.”
“As schools work to adjust to this public health emergency, by closing campuses and transitioning to online classes, we must ensure that student veterans who rely on the GI Bill can continue to pursue a quality education, while remaining financially secure. No student or their family should be worried about losing their GI benefits during this difficult time.”
“The bipartisanship that was shown today, is a sign that we are all committed to maintaining the well-being and safety of our student veterans. I, along with the rest of my colleagues, will continue to work to ensure our veterans receive the support they deserve.”
