WASHINGTON—Congressman Henry Cuellar (TX-28), a member of the U.S. House Appropriations Committee and serves on the Subcommittees of Homeland Security and Defense, released the following statement after attending a Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) Member Meeting at the Capitol with White House Chief of Staff John Kelly, to discuss the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) Program:

“Today, I met with General John Kelly and members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus Chairwoman (CAPAC) Dr. Judy Chu, along with members from the Senate, to discuss the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Program and the DREAMers. I thank everyone who participated in this productive meeting that addressed a variety of concerns from the House and Senate, and from the Administration.”

“As a member of the House Appropriations Committee, I am committed to finding a solution for DREAMers and addressing other priorities including CHIP reauthorization, funding community health centers and the military, and others by the end of the week,” said Congressman Cuellar. “Congress is extremely behind schedule to enact full-year appropriations and it is time that we secure government funding to provide vital services to our fellow Americans.”

Representative Cuellar added, “It was clear from today’s meeting with General Kelly that there has been a shift in the President’s tone on the border wall. The White House Chief of Staff explained that they are willing to work with Congress on the issue of border security and the Caucus held an open discussion to address the issue of immigration and DACA in the United States.”

“Moving forward, I am encouraged that the Administration will work with members of Congress in a bipartisan way, to find permanent solutions to the issues discussed today, quickly and efficiently.
