Edinburg, TX—Congressman Henry Cuellar (TX-28) announces $348,002 in federal funds to the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. These funds, awarded through the U.S. Department of Education’s TRIO program, will be used to assist low income and first-generation college students to remain on track to graduate. As the pandemic continues, these grants come at a needed time.

As a senior Member of the Appropriations Committee, Congressman Cuellar secured$1,100,000,000 for the TRIO program in the FY21 Appropriations bill.

“It is critical that we provide academic support to some of our most vulnerable students on their journey to graduation during these unprecedented times,” said Congressman Cuellar. â€śThis investment will lay the foundation they need to graduate, continue their education, and start successful careers. As a senior Member of the Appropriations Committee, I will continue to work hard in ensuring the next generation has access to a quality education and the tools to drive our economy forwardI’d like to thank President Guy Bailey and the rest of the university’s staff for their continued efforts in supporting disadvantaged students. Lastly, I want to thank my fellow South Texas Representatives, Congressmen Vicente Gonzalez and Filemon Vela, for their commitment to enhancing education initiatives.”

These funds were under the Student Support Services (SSS) Program, one of the TRIO programs. The SSS is designed to increase college persistence and completion for low-income and first-generation college students. These funds awarded to institutions of higher education will support opportunities for academic enrichment, career counseling, and supplemental financial assistance for program participants.

Federal TRIO Programs

The TRIO Programs are federal outreach and student services programs designed to identify and provide services for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. TRIO includes eight programs targeted to serve and assist low-income individuals, first-generation college students, and individuals with disabilities to progress through the academic pipeline from middle school to postbaccalaureate programs. TRIO also includes a training program for directors and staff of TRIO projects.
