Rio Grande City, TX – On October 17, 2024, Congressman Henry Cuellar, Ph.D. (TX-28) announced $2,794,388 in Operation Stonegarden funding for Starr County.
“Local law enforcement ensures everyone’s safety in Starr County,” said Dr. Cuellar, a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee. “I am proud to help our law enforcement with the funding they need to keep our communities safe. Thank you to Starr County Sheriff Rene Fuentes, RGC Chief of Police Noe Castillo, Roma Chief of Police Iv Garza, Escobares Chief of Police Pedro Estada, La Grulla Chief of Police Jason Venencia, and other law enforcement officials for the work they do in protecting our communities. This critical funding will help them carry out their jobs in keeping our southern border secure.”
Congressman Cuellar helped create Operation Stonegarden in 2008. Since then, the program has become instrumental in funding efforts to secure the southern border.
These funds will help local law enforcement with overtime pay, fuel costs, new police units, and more.
Funding will go the Starr County Sherriff’s Office, Starr County Attorney’s Office, Local District Attorney’s Office, Rio Grande City Police Department, Roma Police Department, La Grulla Police Department, Escobares Police Department, and Texas DPS.
Since 2008, over $30 million in Stonegarden funding has been provided to Starr County. In FY 24, Congressman Cuellar secured $81 million for the program nationally.
His initiative in acquiring this funding reflects his commitment to helping law enforcement and keeping our communities safe.
