Rene E. De Coss Appointed as Presiding Judge for the City of Brownsville’s Municipal Court

BROWNSVILLE, TX – The City of Brownsville appointed Rene E. De Coss as Presiding Judge for the City of Brownsville’s Municipal Court. The Municipal Court works to provide citizens with courteous and efficient administration of justice and case management through the hearing of cases of city ordinance and code violations, parking and traffic violations, and Class C Misdemeanor violations. 

De Coss brings over 25 years of legal experience to the Municipal Court as Presiding Judge. Prior to this appointment, Judge De Coss served as City of Brownsville City Attorney starting in 2018. In 2015, he was appointed to the 445th State District Court by Governor Greg Abbott. He also served at the Cameron County District Attorney’s Office, as well as holding the positions of contract Municipal Court Judge and Associate Municipal Court Judge for the City of Brownsville.  

“We are privileged to have Judge De Coss as Presiding Municipal Court Judge,” said Brownsville City Manager Noel Bernal. “This position is of great responsibility, where one is entrusted with the fair administration of justice, while also preserving the rule of law, ultimately protecting the rights of the people – all of which we know Judge De Coss will carry out effectively.” Mr. Bernal shared Judge De Coss is committed to establishing an open process for future Associate Judge positions at the Municipal Court.

Judge De Coss has been in private practice since 1998, concentrating in criminal, civil, and family law at the state and federal levels.  

He is also a member of the following associations:  

  • Cameron County Bar Association 
  • Cameron County Criminal Defense Bar Association 

He received a Bachelor of Arts and a Juris Doctorate from Baylor University and Baylor School of Law in 1995.
