It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of Brownsville and Cameron County native, Kris Kristofferson. Kristofferson was a man of many noteworthy talents and contributions including being a Rhodes Scholar, Golden Gloves boxer, Army Ranger and award-winning singer- and actor.

Kris Kristofferson was born June 22, 1936, in Brownsville, Texas to a military family. It was in Brownsville at the ageof 11 that he wrote his first song. Kristofferson went on to release his first album, Kristofferson, in 1970 which wasreissued in 1971 with a new name, Me and Bobby McGee, and became a Billboard Country Music Top 10 album.

Kristofferson has said on numerous documented occasions that Brownsville, Texas was his favorite place on the planet. While he and his family moved around, they always returned to Brownsville.

Kristofferson won many awards and accolades both for his singing-songwriting and acting throughout his prolific life career. Kristofferson’s fond memories of his time in Brownsville coupled with his fame, helped to bring awareness to the region, Cameron County and Brownsville, Texas. In addition to his success, many locals remember his 1981 Esquire magazine cover showcasing a t-shirt highlighting Brownsville and sister city Matamoros, Tamaulipas.

“I am deeply saddened by the passing of Kris Kristofferson. Kristofferson’s very public affection for Brownsville and the time he spent here as a child will be cherished. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends and fans throughout the world. May he Rest in Peace,” stated Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño, Jr.

Cameron County will honor Kristofferson’s legacy with a resolution on October 8th, 2024. Additionally, CameronCounty and the city of Brownsville’s Riverfront development project in downtown Brownsville will feature a Cultural Revival and Musical Revue District featuring the Kris Kristofferson Events Park, The Kris Kristofferson County Porchand the Kristofferson Butik which will offer paraphernalia officially authorized, designed and licensed by the Kristofferson family.
