Regina Torres refuses to let anything hold her back. A freshman at PSJA Southwest Early College High School, she has defied expectations by competing in both varsity swimming and water polo, proving that determination and heart can overcome any challenge.

Born with paraplegia, Torres uses a walker for mobility, but in the water, she is unstoppable.

“I’m really lucky because I have so much strength in my arms. When it comes to kicking, I can’t do that with my legs,” Regina explains. “That’s a disadvantage that I have. But I don’t let that stop me.”

Torres’ passion for swimming and water polo has driven her to push past limits, inspiring teammates and competitors alike.

“My favorite part is getting in the water with my teammates and making a plan on how we can strategize,” Torres shares. “The sport has given me discipline because if I want to improve my time or become a better water polo player, I need to have a lot of discipline.”

Her dedication has earned the admiration of her coaches and peers.

“No matter if she is the one still swimming, she always completes every set. I make sure to treat her like any other athlete. She has that confidence that every young woman should have,” said Erica Amador, PSJA Swim & Water Polo Coach.

Torres, who started her journey on the middle school swim team, now stands as a leader and role model for younger athletes in the tri-city area. She hopes to encourage others to break barriers and pursue their passions, no matter the obstacles.

“This district feels like one big family—whether you’re from San Juan, Alamo, or Pharr, we all support each other,” Torres adds.

PSJA ISD is an open-enrollment school district welcoming students from anywhere in the Rio Grande Valley. For more information, visit www.psjaisd.us/whypsja
