The Pharr City Commission joined neighboring cities and PSJA ISD in proclaiming the week of October 23rd – 31st as “Red Ribbon Week.” This annual event is dedicated to promoting drug prevention and encouraging healthy, drug-free lifestyles among students and the community. By participating in Red Ribbon Week, these local entities aim to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and foster a supportive environment for youth to make positive choices.

Local leaders recognize that the support of residents is crucial in the fight against substance abuse. Established by Congress in 1988 to honor Drug Enforcement Administration agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, the Red Ribbon Campaign promotes a drug-free lifestyle and encourages community involvement. The red ribbon symbolizes the enduring belief that individual actions can make a difference, calling on all Americans to show their support by wearing a red ribbon and participating in drug-free activities.

The proclamation was presented to Pharr Chief of Police Juan Gonzalez and Chief Rolando Garcia from PSJA ISD. “Thank you for having us and supporting our Red Ribbon Week initiatives as we work collaboratively to fight against drug use in our communities, especially among our youth,” said Chief Garcia.

The Red Ribbon Initiative will be observed year-round, reinforcing the unified and visible commitment to a drug-free community and inviting all citizens of Pharr-San Juan-Alamo to engage in drug-free activities throughout the year.
