BROWNSVILLE – To help some local businesses recover from the economic injury of COVID-19, one radio station is giving away advertising to help them drive sales for their products or services. KRIX-FM, better known as 105.5 Rocket, is holding the “Rock Your Business” contest for the next several weeks.

All local business owners in the Rio Grande Valley may enter the contest through the radio station’s Facebook page at Facebook.com/1055Rocket. Employees of locally owned businesses may also enter the contest on behalf of their employer. Local business owners are not required to have a payroll so those who are home-based or self-employed are still eligible.

To enter the “Rock Your Business” contest, one essentially needs to take a photo of himself or herself in front of the business and post it to the 105.5 Rocket Facebook page along with the business name and phone number. The first winner will be announced June 8, and the owner will receive $1,055 in radio commercials to promote his or her business. Then the contest will begin again. It will run three times for a total of three winning businesses.

Station owner Eduardo Gallegos came up with the contest because he wanted to set an example for the “Shop Local First” initiative.

“105.5 Rocket is the only locally owned radio station in the RGV. We’d expect local businesses to advertise with us first, so now is the time to support them,” Gallegos said. “We have a loyal listening audience with spending power so the winners will definitely gain from the commercials. We also have a strong Facebook following so all the businesses that enter will still get noticed. It just makes sense to help each other out.”

According to Gallegos, the station has been playing continuous music without commercials since it officially launched on April 13. He held off the advertising for at least a month to let listeners soak in the music.

“The Valley didn’t have classic rock for a very long time, so we’ve been dedicated to playing as much of the music many of us love and grew up with,” he said. “We actually want our first commercials to be from the winners of the contest.”

The “Rock Your Business” contest is also being sponsored by the Harlingen Area Chamber of Commerce, San Benito Chamber of Commerce, Los Fresnos Chamber of Commerce and South Padre Island Chamber of Commerce. For more information on the contest, email info@1055Rocket.com.
