According to Trainor Evans, CEO and Chairman of Rios Boots, Mercedes can be called the Capital of the Hand Made Boots and I agree with him.

Mercedes has been the home of the boot making since the last century, in fact Rios of Mercedes Handmade Boots traces its roots to 1853 when the Rios family began to make boots in General Teran, Mexico.  Around the turn of the century when things became unsettled in Mexico and civil war was being fomented, the Rios family moved to the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas settling near what was to become Mercedes, Texas.

I know that Hernán Gonzalez the Executive Director for the Mercedes EDC will think of an idea to make sure everyone knows abut the new title for Mercedes.

Speaking of Hernán, Texas Border Business is featuring him in this issue, in such a short period of time in his position he has done great things that promotes not just Mercedes but the whole region. This article will give you an insight of how he came out with the idea of the life size aluminum boots that have brought attention to the Queen city of Mercedes.

On another matter, just recently, Jim Darling mayor of McAllen celebrated his State of the City address. In this issue you will also find lots of information of what was said. Since last year, Mayor Darling has made his state of the city address quite different. If you were not there last year he entered the McAllen Convention Center riding his bike and this year he entered the convention jogging followed by hundreds of children that were part of the main event.

Lots of work in planning and creating such presentation and can be attributed to Producer of the State of the City event Brian Godinez, president of Gabriel Communications. He said to Texas Border Business, “I am proud of the partnership we established with Mayor Darling, the City Commission, McAllen ISD and the City of McAllen staff to have been able to create a powerful message together about how important it is to build a solid foundation for our children’s future, in both an entertaining and informative manner.”

In the hotel business, McAllen continues to be the center of that activity. Just a few months ago, it was announced that a new Embassy suites hotel will be built next to the Performing Arts building under construction. This month, La Quinta developers celebrated their groundbreaking ceremony to start building a four-story hotel.

And if that was not enough, The cookie is coming. Phoenix Hospitality Group announced told Texas Border Business that the popular Embassy Suites Hotel McAllen will change to the “DoubleTree Suites by Hilton® McAllen” this May 2015, after undergoing approximately $10 million dollars in renovations and upgrades.

Ed McClure, CEO and owner of Phoenix Hospitality Group, PHG, was hired in July 2013 to oversee the management and redevelopment of the hotel.  “Over the past year we analyzed many alternative strategies and all pointed to the DoubleTree brand because Hilton allows and encourages its DoubleTree owners to respond to local demands and create a true full-service hotel, restaurant and banquet facilities that ideally suit its locale and market.”
