EDINBURG, Texas – Palm Valley Animal Society (PVAS), the largest animal shelter in the Rio Grande Valley, has taken in 54 dogs from its fourth hoarding case of 2025, pushing the organization’s already overwhelmed shelter system to the brink.
With the upcoming closure of its Trenton facility and more than 500 animals still housed at that location, this unexpected mass intake is placing urgent pressure on space, supplies, and staffing.
“As the region’s largest shelter, we’re the ones who get called in emergencies like this,” said Suzette Cruz, Executive Director of PVAS. “But we can’t do it alone. We need adopters, fosters, and donors to step up right now.”
PVAS is urgently asking the public to adopt first, with fostering as another lifesaving option. All foster homes receive free food, supplies, and medicine as needed, PVAS covers all costs.
Though adoption fees are already waived for select pets, free adoptions for all animals will begin August 1st as part of NBCUniversal Local’s Clear the Shelters campaign.
