HUNTSVILLE – Sophomore Sandra Putz won the Flight C Singles Championship to lead The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women’s tennis team at the Bearkat Invitational on Sunday at the Kelly and Ina May McAdams Tennis Complex.
Putz defeated Tyler Junior College’s Momoko Yoshimura in three sets. After falling in the opening set 6-7, Putz bounced back with a 6-1 win in the second to force a deciding third set. Putz dominated the third set by winning 10-1 to clinch the championship.
The Vaqueros added two other wins on the day as sophomore Katarina Sasaroga defeated Sam Houston State’s Stevie Ybarra 6-1, 6-1 in Flight A.
Putz and Sasaroga also teamed up for a doubles victory as they defeated Texas State’s Josefina Cassara and Rishona Lewis 7-5 in Flight A.
