Keeping storm drain inlets clean and free of pollution and debris is a message that the McAllen Public Works Department hopes to get out into the community, thanks to help from 4th graders at Roosevelt Elementary School.
Earlier this year, 4th graders at the school were part of a special initiative, called S.T.O.R.M., which is a storm drain inlet art project. Students received a presentation on the watershed model and learned about preventing stormwater pollution from bacteria, pesticides, grass clippings, leaves and other debris and trash from going into the McAllen storm drain system and ending up in the watersheds, the Laguna Madre and Arroyo Colorado.
The school then presented artwork to paint on their designated stormwater, that would convey the message:
Stop pollution! Only Rain down the storm drain, McAllen!
Once the artwork was reviewed and approved by the McAllen Public Works Department, Public Works crews delivered paint supplies and a new inlet top for the student volunteers to paint their inlet artwork.
