The outcome of elections have an impact on citizens living anywhere in the Rio Grande Valley. With that in mind, the Department of Criminal Justice at The University of Texas-Pan American is hosting an open forum Wednesday, July 23 featuring the candidates for the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office.
Students and community members are invited to attend the forum scheduled for 3-5 p.m. in the University Ballroom at UTPA. All five Democratic candidates, the two Republican candidates as well as the Libertarian Party have been invited to participate. Each nominee will have an opportunity to speak and describe their qualifications and goals for the office. Questions from the audience will be mediated by a moderator who does not have any association with any of the candidates.
“Our objective is to ensure that our election process has transparency and that our students and community members are well informed. At this forum voters will have a chance to get to know the candidates and their qualifications,” said Dr. Rosalva Resendiz, associate professor of criminal justice, who is helping organize the event.
No pre-registration is required to attend.
