McALLEN – More than 60 PSJA ISD students made their way to the McAllen Performing Arts Center on Sunday, April 7 for the 2nd Annual Palm Awards, which celebrates the love of arts by recognizing the local high school theatre community.
Dozens of schools from across the area were judged and nominated in both musical and non-musical categories. Among the nominees were PSJA North Early College HS with 24 nominations, PSJA Southwest Early College HS with 20 nominations, and PSJA Memorial ECHS, which got nominated for 16 awards.
The event featured a red carpet for the student nominees, mirroring the Tony Awards. They also featured performances from top nominees, including a performance by the PSJA North thespians with excerpts from their musical “The Wiz” as well as a segment performed by PSJA North Senior Dago Lopez, who was nominated for best actor in a musical.
At the end of the ceremony, PSJA ISD theatre students won the following 12 awards:
