McALLEN, Texas – The Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Independent School District (PSJA ISD) continues its commitment to empowering young women through events like the 2nd Annual Young Women’s Leadership Summit: Fierce & Fearless: Embracing the Power Within, held Tuesday, December 17, 2024, at the Radisson Hotel in McAllen, Texas.
The summit brought together over 100 senior students from across all PSJA high schools, all first-generation early college students pursuing Associate Degrees, College Certificates, Core Complete or enrolled in PSJA Academies.
Dr. Linda Uribe, Executive Officer for College and Career Readiness, shared the vision behind PSJA’s efforts in organizing the Young Women’s Leadership Summit.
“It is important for us to reach out to first-generation female students because we want to ensure they have a strong foundation and the leadership skills to know they have what it takes to make an impact in this world,” said Dr. Linda Uribe, Executive Officer for College and Career Readiness. “Too often, as females, we feel the need to step back, but this conference aims to instill confidence and leadership, so these young women understand they have the power to create meaningful change.”
Organized by the PSJA College Readiness Department in partnership with various district teams, the event aimed to foster leadership skills, boost self-confidence, and encourage networking. Attendees had the opportunity to learn from accomplished women and community leaders who shared personal stories and insights during a series of breakout sessions
The Keynote Speaker, Marlen Lopez, a PSJA Alumna and Senior Wealth Advisor shared valuable insights from her over 20 years of experience in international and wealth management. She currently serves as the PSJA Education Foundation President. Leadership Development Sessions led by accomplished women leaders from across the Rio Grande Valley covered a variety of topics including courageous communication, entrepreneurship, leadership development, interpersonal skills, and building your personal brand.
For PSJA senior, Skarlet de Leon, the summit was a transformative experience.
“I’ve gained so much knowledge through networking with other girls and inspiring women. This experience has been about empowering women to step out of their comfort zones, express themselves confidently, and lead,” said De Leon. “I’m grateful to have been a part of this and knowing there’s support for young women is inspiring. No matter what, we have the potential to lead and make a difference.”
PSJA ISD, an open-enrollment district serving over 30,000 students, is dedicated to creating opportunities for all learners. Families throughout the Rio Grande Valley are encouraged to explore the district’s programs and learn more at www.psjaisd.us.
