PHARR – For more than two decades, Pharr-San Juan-Alamo ISD’s Gifted and Talented (GT) program has been offering lessons and activities in STEM to students during the summer. This past week, GT students in 1st through 3rd grade dabbled in science, robotics, chess, got to fly drones and even beat the heat with some fun water activities.

“The GT program is intended to help those students who have the potential to go beyond the regular classroom setting,” said Noemi Serna, GT coordinator. “We’re giving them an opportunity to work with coding, robotics, and programming so that they can have a better understanding of what it’s like to work in a STEM career.”

In a few classes, children, ages six to seven, sat patiently, highly concentrated in the game of chess before them. A more calming scene than Monday’s activity where they built, not a dollhouse, but a mansion and added gadgets to it. Just one of several activities used to promote skills that may not only apply to their future careers in STEM, but in the classroom as well.

“The best thing is that they’re exposed to it so if they’re interested in it, they can continue with it,” said Daisy Maldonado, 3rdgrade teacher at Santos Livas Elementary. “Like with chess, they can apply it, and they can join the chess team.”

The annual GT camps continue this week until June 20 for students in 4th through 8th grade.
