PSJA ISD to Open Warming Shelters in Preparation for Arctic Blast

SAN JUAN, Texas – In response to the Arctic Cold Blast expected to impact the Rio Grande Valley, Pharr-San Juan-Alamo ISD (PSJA ISD) is partnering with the American Red Cross and the cities of Pharr, San Juan, and Alamo to open warming shelters for the community. 

The following facilities will serve as warming shelters for students, parents, staff, and community members starting on Monday, Jan. 20, 2025, at 5:00 PM through Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2025: 
 
Dr. Daniel P. King PSJA College & University Center (703 E. Sam Houston Blvd., San Juan, TX) 
Jesus “Jesse” Vela, Jr. Middle School (1819 US-83 BUS, Alamo, TX 78516 Gym B) 
Jaime Escalante Middle School (6123 S Cage Blvd, Pharr, TX 78577 Gym A) 

To prioritize safety during the severe weather, PSJA ISD will cancel classes on Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2025, and implement a delayed start on Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2025. 

Additionally, Grab & Go meals will be available for students and families at all middle school campuses on Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2025, from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM.

Meals will be provided at the shelters, and pets are welcome. All individuals seeking shelter are encouraged to bring the following: 
 
    •    Blankets and pillows 
    •    Medications 
    •    Personal toiletries 
    •    Pet supplies, including leashes 

“We are deeply committed to the well-being of our PSJA family and the entire community,” said Superintendent Dr. Alejandro Elias. “Opening our doors to provide a warm, safe place during this severe weather is just one of the ways we’re here to support each other. If you or your loved ones need assistance, please don’t hesitate to visit the shelter or access our additional resources.
