PHARR, Texas – In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, the PSJA Southwest Early College High School Theatre program presents “Mojada,” the very first play performed entirely in Spanish on October 11-13, 2024, at the PSJA Southwest Blackbox Theatre. The production not only showcases the talent of the Pharr-San Juan-Alamo ISD Fine Arts students but also highlights the rich Dual Language opportunities available to PSJA ISD students.
PSJA ISD is committed to providing enriching opportunities for our students through creative fine arts and dual language programs that empower students to excel academically and personally while celebrating their multicultural heritage.
“Mojada” tells the powerful story of a mother who has fled her homeland in search of a better life for her family. As she navigates the challenges of identity and belonging in a new world, she grapples with the sacrifices made and the dreams that haunt her.
“We felt the need to recognize a particular group of students who often get lost in an educational setting because of language,” said Sergio Sauceda, PSJA Southwest ECHS Theatre Director. “This show provides a creative outlet for our English Learners and Dual Language students who sometimes hesitate to participate in extracurricular activities due to a lack of confidence in speaking English. By offering a unique opportunity to perform in their native language, we aim to break that stigma and encourage their involvement.”
For PSJA Southwest ECHS 12th Grade student Karissa Elizondo being part of Mojada has been an empowering but extremely challenging experience.
“I typically play comical characters and stepping into the role of Medea has forced me out of my comfort zone,” said Elizondo. “I have come to a deeper understanding of the circumstances people of our heritage often face that are overlooked by media and the public. I hope to share this story of sacrifice and strength with our audience. I would like to thank my directors for seeing my potential and providing me with this opportunity.”
The production supports the district’s mission to promote multicultural pride within its students and the PSJA community. The performances of “Mojada” will take place on October 11, 12, and 13 at the PSJA Southwest Black Box. Tickets are available for purchase at the door.
