PHARR, Texas – In a powerful effort to raise awareness about the dangers of drinking and driving before the spring break holiday, PSJA T. Jefferson T-STEM Early College High School (PSJA T-STEM ECHS) Senior Dania Hernandez partnered with the PSJA ISD Police Department (PSJA PD) and local Law Enforcement agencies to host the annual Shattered Dreams event, a simulation car accident designed to demonstrate the real-life consequences of driving under the influence.
As part of Hernandez’s Capstone Project, a long-term, in-depth investigative project focusing on real-world issues, the senior took the initiative to organize and execute this event. The Capstone Project requires students to research a topic related to their career interests and culminates in a final product, paper, portfolio, and presentation.

Before the simulated car crash, special guest Judge Renee Betancourt and Hidalgo County District Attorney Terry Palacios addressed students, emphasizing the legal consequences of drinking and driving. They discussed the severe penalties associated with DUI offenses, including fines, imprisonment, and lifelong repercussions, and urged students to make responsible choices.

“As a student, I wanted to bring this presentation to my school because I know how important it is for my classmates to see the real dangers of drunk driving,” said Dania Hernandez. “I hope this event leaves a lasting impact and helps prevent tragedies in our community.”
Held at PSJA T-STEM ECHS, the event featured a realistic mock crash scene, first responders in action, and a staged arrest to give students a first-hand look at the devastating impacts of impaired driving. Participants witnessed the emotional aftermath of a fatal crash, reinforcing the message that one poor decision can change multiple lives forever.
“This event is important for our students because soon they will be the drivers out in our community, and they need to understand the dangers of drinking and driving and the consequences that come with it,” said PSJA Police Seargent Joseph Garcia. “My message to the students is to remember that it takes one second to make a mistake and your whole lifetime to fix it.”
