SAN JUAN – The Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Independent School District’s Communications Department recently recognized 10 students who were part of the inaugural K-TRI Student Reporters Media Team. The juniors and seniors representing all PSJA ISD high schools were an extension of the district’s Football season coverage.

The Student Reporters worked with professional videographers from the district and shadowed PSJA Early College High School Video Technology Teacher Pedro Leija during the 2018-2019 Football Season. The students gained behind-the-scenes and on-camera experience and took over the district’s social media pages during the games.

The team included students from PSJA Early College High School (ECHS), PSJA North ECHS, PSJA Southwest ECHS, PSJA Memorial ECHS, and PSJA T. Jefferson T-STEM ECHS.

This is one of several district initiatives that provide hands-on learning for students interested in a career in Communications. Starting this school year, two cohorts were started in partnership with South Texas College to offer Associate Degrees in Advertising/Public Relations and Graphic Arts. These degree options are part of several PSJA Academies available to PSJA ISD students starting their sophomore year.

Through a cohort approach, the PSJA Academies include 20 fields of studies in the following areas: the School of Arts and Humanities; School of Health Service and Public Service; School of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, or STEM; and the School of Business and Industry.

Senior Melissa Lugo expressed her gratitude to have been a part of this first cohort.

“I loved it! PSJA already offers so much to their students, and this is just another opportunity,” said Lugo.
