PHARR – For the fifth consecutive year, the Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Independent School District (PSJA ISD) is offering free softball skills practice during the summer for students in 2nd-6th grade.
The Softball Pitching Program is part of PSJA ISD’s annual Summer Sports Camps, which also include golf, tennis, soccer, track, swimming, and open gym for PSJA students from Kinder-12th grade.
As the sports camps come to a close this Thursday, PSJA Early College High School Head Softball Coach Eric Madera reflects on another successful summer softball season.
“We’ve been doing this for [several] years. Some of these kids are returning from last year. Every day, they’ve just been growing as we go,” said Coach Madera.
Incoming 6th grader at Austin Middle School Nikki Jo Hernandez has participated in the Softball Pitching Program since she was a 3rd grader and enjoys both the physical and social benefits of the camp.
“I like that we get to pitch, the warm ups, the exercise, and just being with my friends,” Hernandez said.
Coach Madera along with his assistant coaches Alyssa Garza, Elaine Madera, and Samuel Nyepo teach the students the basics of pitching, steps, windmills, catching, throwing, and hitting during the 4-week camp.
