SAN JUAN – Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Independent School District (PSJA ISD) hosted a Groundbreaking Ceremony on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, to celebrate the renovation of its iconic PSJA ISD Auditorium Dome. Once fully renovated, the historic venue will reclaim its former glory and serve as the home for future fine arts performances and district events.

Built in 1960 and known as one of two iconic “Oso Domes” by former students, the PSJA Auditorium Dome became more than just a performance space. For decades, it was the stage for lasting memories, filled with applause, music, and family celebrations. Following years of dormancy, construction is underway to revitalize the Dome into a modern, state-of-the-art auditorium, set to welcome guests again in Fall 2026 with upgraded amenities and seating for up to 1,200.
The ceremony included remarks from district leaders, students, and the fine arts director. Attendees included community members, teachers, and PSJA alum Rick Diaz, who served as Master of Ceremonies.
PSJA Superintendent Dr. Alejandro Elias reflected on the significance of this project.
“To me, this is a historic moment for PSJA. For years, this auditorium was dormant, but now it’s coming back as a legacy for our students and community,” said Dr. Elias, a PSJA High School Class of 1988 alum. “PSJA is a family, and when we provide our students with the best facilities they will succeed—not just academically, but in fine arts, athletics, and every area in which they are challenged. This auditorium represents opportunity, and our students will continue to excel.”
The PSJA Fine Arts programs are more than extracurricular activities—they are a point of pride for the Tri-City area of Pharr, San Juan, and Alamo. Over the decades, PSJA Fine Arts has nurtured countless students who later found success as actors, musicians, dancers, and artists, with many tracing their beginnings back to PSJA.

Already PSJA Fine Arts students have earned an impressive array of state and regional honors, highlighting the district’s artistic excellence. PSJA North Early College High School earned the title of 5A State Champion Theatre Team. PSJA Southwest Early College High School placed as 1st Runner-Up at the UIL State Theatre competition and also earned the 5A State Champion Documentary award with their powerful film Conquista.
During the ceremony, PSJA Fine Arts Director Jon Taylor also shared his personal connection to the venue and what this renovation means for students.
“This project is close to my heart,” said Taylor. “As a rookie band director, I first stood on stage here with my students in 1979. The auditorium has always been a PSJA ISD icon, recognized across the state for its unique round shape and incredible acoustics. With this renovation, we’re honoring our past while building a bright future—providing our students with a modern space equipped with the latest sound, lighting, and video technology. We can’t wait to see the amazing performances that will once again fill this dome.”

A Legacy Opportunity
As part of this historic project, PSJA ISD is offering the community a chance to own a piece of history through the purchase of PSJA Legacy Chairs—authentic seats from the original Oso Dome Auditorium. Proceeds will benefit the PSJA Education Foundation, providing scholarships and opportunities for PSJA students.
