SAN JUAN, Texas – While most recent high school graduates are still mapping out their futures, David De Leon has already turned his passion into a thriving business. At just 18 years old, the PSJA Memorial Early College High School Class of 2024 graduate is the proud owner of The LionsCage Barbershop in San Juan, proving that with dedication, skill, and the right opportunities, success can start early.

His journey from student to entrepreneur was shaped by his experiences in PSJA ISD’s Career & Technical Education (CTE) Program, where he earned his Cosmetology Certificate. Today, his barbershop stands as a testament to his hard work and the real-world impact of hands-on learning.

According to De Leon, his first challenge was choosing a career path. Initially considering welding, he quickly realized his true passion elsewhere.

“I tried welding, and I didn’t like it. Then I had to choose between welding and cosmetology,” shared De Leon. “I chose cosmetology and followed my dream. I know welding makes money, and people told me to stick with it, but I wanted to do what I love. I don’t regret it at all.”

Through PSJA ISD’s Cosmetology Program, De Leon gained hands-on experience and earned his Cosmetology Certificate through the Texas Barbering & Cosmetology. His skills were further honed through competitions like SkillsUSA, where he advanced to the state level in San Antonio.

“PSJA gave me the opportunity to compete, and I made it to state. It was a great experience,” he shared.

De Leon’s passion for hairstyling and barbering ignited during the pandemic when he started cutting friends’ hair. As his confidence and skill set grew, so did his determination to turn his passion into a career.

“They taught me everything I needed to know. They promised I would learn everything I needed to, and I did,” De Leon said, reflecting on his experience at PSJA ISD.

Now a business owner, De Leon is not stopping there. He is currently pursuing business courses at South Texas College (STC) to expand his knowledge on managing and growing his barbershop.

“I’m taking business courses at STC, and I’ve learned a lot about how to manage a business properly. It’s great because you never stop learning,” he said.

His story serves as an inspiration for young students looking to turn their passion into a career.

“I’m still only 18, and I took the risk to open my own barbershop,” said De Leon. “It’s been an amazing experience, and I encourage anyone to take a chance on something they love.”

PSJA ISD is an open-enrollment school district serving over 30,000 students, welcoming students from anywhere in the Rio Grande Valley. Parents interested in learning more about the district’s Career & Technical Education (CTE) programs can visit www.psjaisd.us/cte
