PHARR, Texas – Dozens of Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Independent School District (PSJA ISD) special education students from across the district showcased their skills and teamwork at the Special Olympics Texas Bocce Competition held at the PSJA Stadium on September 25, 2024.
Special Olympics Texas is dedicated to providing year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Through these programs, participants develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, and experience the joy of competition.
The students showcased their athletic abilities by competing in Bocce Ball. This Special Olympics sport provides people with special needs the opportunity to have social contact, develop physically, and gain self-confidence. Next to Soccer and Golf, Bocce is the third most participated sport in the world.
According to PSJA Special Education Director Veronica Quintana, allowing the students to participate in the Special Olympics events helps the athletes showcase their athletic skills and determination.
“We are so proud of our exceptional student’s competitive spirit when they participate in these sporting events,” said Quintana. “We know what our students are capable of and we are so proud to see them showcase their skills in front of their families, district administrators, and their peers. At PSJA we truly offer opportunities for all.”
