PHARR, Texas – Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Independent School District (PSJA ISD) is excited to announce a new initiative that puts health and nutrition at the forefront of their student’s daily meals. Starting in October, the PSJA Child Nutrition Program (CNP) will be introducing organic fruits and vegetables to the school menus across all 44 campuses.

As part of their ongoing commitment to providing nutritious meals that fuel student success, the PSJA CNP has taken steps to incorporate organic produce options, sourced from local farms, into the lunch offerings.

Thanks to an $85,000 grant from the Texas Department of Agriculture’s Local Food for Schools grant program, the PSJA CNP is able to promote healthier eating habits, support local agriculture, and ensure that students have access to the freshest and most nutritious produce available.

“We believe that healthy minds start with healthy meals,” said PSJA Child Nutrition Administrator Pedro Contreras. “By integrating organic fruits and vegetables into our menus, we are not only enhancing the quality of food we provide but also teaching our students the importance of healthy eating choices. Additionally, this initiative aligns with our district’s mission to foster lifelong wellness and learning.”

Beginning in October students will soon notice organic cucumbers and zucchini in the lunch line, with more fresh, organic options rolling out in the near future.

“We are excited to introduce this innovative initiative for our students, offering healthier meal options that fuel both their academic performance and physical well-being,” said PSJA Superintendent of Schools Dr. Alejandro Elias. “Sourcing organic produce from local farms allows us to invest in the health of our students while supporting sustainable practices within our community. This forward-thinking approach is yet another way we are preparing our students for lifelong success as well-rounded, healthy individuals.”
