A PSJA High School student was transported to a local hospital after he doused himself with gasoline in front of his peers during a morning fine arts class, with the apparent intent of setting himself on fire. Thanks to a quick response from fellow classmates, he did not cause harm to himself or others. Faculty members and students secured the area and that portion of the building was evacuated.
The San Juan Fire Department, EMS and Police Department were immediately called to assist in the situation. The Fire Department cleaned the spilled gas and ventilated the area.
The district’s counseling crisis team was immediately activated for students who witnessed the situation. The school’s administration has been calling parents to alert them of the event.Â
We are very grateful to these students, faculty of PSJA High, City of San Juan emergency response teams and district security personnel for their professional and prompt response. We are thankful that what could have been a very tragic situation was avoided.
