EDINBURG – A group of PSJA Early College High School students and teachers took flight to DHR Health on June 10 to deliver 1,000 paper cranes to patients in the Pediatric Oncology unit.
Students in the pharmacology and medical terminology classes started the endeavor in honor of a Japanese legend, which states that anyone who folds 1,000 paper cranes is granted one wish. More than 170 health science students joined together during the last few weeks of school to create the paper cranes, each one carefully thought out and decorated to a theme representative of the students who made them.
After they finished making the paper cranes, the group got together to deliver the cranes in person with their goal of donating their wish to the children. For 2019 PSJA ECHS Graduate Earl Vallangca, this project was about delivering hope.
“We wanted to remind the patients that they are not alone in this fight and that Bears care,” Vallangca said.
In addition to hand-delivering the cranes, the group of students, recent graduates and their teachers decorated the entire Pediatric Oncology playroom as their way of reminding the children of their wish.
