EDINBURG – In its ongoing effort to promote the Rio Grande Valley and Northern Mexico to outside investment, the Hidalgo County Prosperity Task Force has announced the creation of the RioPlex initiative.

This initiative will be independent of Hidalgo County and the Prosperity Task Force. Instead, it will be run and funded by area businesses. And the first order of business for the RioPlex initiative will be the hiring of an executive director as well as a private marketing firm.

“This is an example of a public-private partnership at its best,” said Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez. “The enthusiasm of area businesses for a binational promotional effort has resulted in this stand-alone effort. We congratulate the leadership of local businesses in recognizing the importance of promoting our region to outside investors.”

Local businessman Joaquin Spamer, founder and president of CIL, has taken a lead on the RioPlex initiative and will be overseeing its development.

“I travel the world promoting our region and too often companies from around the world have no idea about our attributes,” said Spamer. “I believe this is a first step in putting this region on the economic development map.”

The RioPlex name was developed by the Prosperity Task Force and adopted by local businesses as a way of not only promoting the Rio Grande Valley, but of Northern Mexico as well.
