The Board of Commissioners of the City of Pharr met for its regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, May 1, 2017, and considered an agenda that included the following highlights:
Pharr Mayor Ambrosio Hernandez, M.D. and the Pharr City Commission welcomed the elected representatives of “Lionsville,” a minitropolis based at IDEA Pharr.
The minitropolis is a civic education learning experience in which students are involved in the democratic process and elect their own governing body, comprised of peer representatives.
In Lionsville, students are able to participate in the mock society by running and operating their own businesses and fellow students participate in the local economy, just as in a real-life scenario.
The City of Pharr and the Pharr Economic Development Corporation attended the launch of Lionsville recently, where Mayor Azul Villarreal presented Mayor Hernandez with the keys to the city.
In turn, Mayor Hernandez invited the Lionsville representatives to attend Monday’s City Commission meeting and run a portion of the meeting to gain real-life experience.
The students sat at the dais and led by Lionsville city manager, presented the “City Events of Interest,” while the Pharr city officials sat in the audience.
After the presentation, Lionsville Mayor Villarreal addressed the City Commission, thanking them for the opportunity.
Mayor Hernandez then invited Mayor Villarreal to sign a joint proclamation declaring May 1, 2017 “Lionsville Day in Pharr.” Congratulations to IDEA Pharr for implementing such a wonderful and hands-on lesson in civic engagement.
