Weslaco, Texas – On Monday, April 30th at 9:00 a.m., the Pharr, San Juan and Alamo Economic Development Corporations will join the national celebration to spotlight small businesses and the tremendous impact they have on our national and local economy.  Small businesses employ nearly half of our country’s workforce and help ensure that our communities remain vibrant.  At a ceremony hosted by the Rio Grande Valley Partnership, all three economic development organizations will proclaim April 29th through May 5th as National Small Business Week.

“Through collaborative efforts from the area economic development agencies and the PSJA Independent School District we are developing a pipeline and ecosystem to inspire entrepreneurship,” Angela Burton, district director said.

In February, the U.S. Small Business Administration’s Lower Rio Grande Valley District Office (LRGVD) and the Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Independent School District signed Strategic Alliance Memorandum (SAM) to encourage entrepreneurship and economic empowerment through entrepreneurial and financial education for young entrepreneurs and students.  As a result of the partnership, a Young Entrepreneurs Conference is being held TODAY with speakers from the SBA, local lenders, and UTRGV Staff.  The conference includes a “pitch contest” by which PSJA ISD Career and Technology students will pitch a product or service for bragging rights.

“The U.S. is home to 30.9 million small businesses who created about 1.9 million jobs in 2015,” Burton stated.  “We are proud to celebrate that success in the LRGV and applaud the resilience and work our entrepreneurs do every day to start, grow and succeed in our neighborhoods, not only making a living for themselves, they are making their neighborhoods vibrant places to live and work, while contributing to our region’s economic strength.”
