EDINBURG, TEXAS – Emmitt Smith, three-time Super Bowl champion and Pro Football Hall of Famer, kicks off the 2019-2020 UTRGV Distinguished Speaker Series Thursday evening in Edinburg. The former Dallas Cowboys running back played 13 seasons with “America’s Team” and led them to three Super Bowl wins in 1992, 1993 and 1996, along with quarterback Troy Aikman and wide receiver Michael Irvin.
Smith led the NFL in rushing four times, he was the league MVP in 1993, and MVP of Super Bowl XXVIII. Smith, who retired from football in 2005, was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2010. He holds the NFL all-time rushing record with 18,355 total career rushing yards. Since his retirement, Smith has transitioned to the role of businessman and entrepreneur, and runs several companies spanning real estate, construction and technology. In addition, he won the third season of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars, and is also an accomplished author.

The event is free and open to the public. Doors to the UTRGV Performing Arts Complex open at 7 p.m. for UTRGV students, faculty and staff with a valid university ID and at 7:15 p.m. for the general public. The event starts at 7:30 p.m.
The Distinguished Speaker Series, a signature program under the leadership of UTRGV Student Activities, aims to provide the university and surrounding community with world-class speakers and lecturers.
The 2020 DSS lineup will also include Ruth Carter, Academy Award winning costume designer, on March 2; and John Leguizamo, actor, stand-up comedian, and producer, on April 7.
