On August 18, 2025, President Donald J. Trump posted a public statement on the social media platform Truth Social, announcing his intention to launch a national effort to eliminate mail-in ballots and electronic voting machines in U.S. elections. The President said the campaign would begin with an executive order aimed at changing how votes are cast and counted in the upcoming 2026 midterm elections.
“I am going to lead a movement to get rid of MAIL-IN BALLOTS,” President Trump wrote, “and also, while we’re at it, Highly ‘Inaccurate,’ Very Expensive, and Seriously Controversial VOTING MACHINES, which cost Ten Times more than accurate and sophisticated Watermark Paper.” He added that paper ballots are “faster” and “leave NO DOUBT, at the end of the evening, as to who WON, and who LOST, the Election.”
President Trump stated that the United States is now the only country using mail-in voting. “We are now the only Country in the World that uses Mail-In Voting,” he claimed. “All others gave it up because of the MASSIVE VOTER FRAUD ENCOUNTERED.” According to international election reports and data from the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance, several democracies—including Switzerland, Germany, and Canada—continue to use mail-in voting under secure and regulated systems.
In his message, the President announced his intent to issue an executive order. “WE WILL BEGIN THIS EFFORT, WHICH WILL BE STRONGLY OPPOSED BY THE DEMOCRATS… by signing an EXECUTIVE ORDER to help bring HONESTY to the 2026 Midterm Elections,” he wrote.
President Trump argued that the federal government holds primary authority in vote counting and tabulation, stating: “The States are merely an ‘agent’ for the Federal Government in counting and tabulating the votes. They must do what the Federal Government, as represented by the President of the United States, tells them, FOR THE GOOD OF OUR COUNTRY.”
He described mail-in ballots and voting machines as fraudulent and ineffective, writing: “ELECTIONS CAN NEVER BE HONEST WITH MAIL-IN BALLOTS/VOTING,” and, “THE MAIL-IN BALLOT HOAX, USING VOTING MACHINES THAT ARE A COMPLETE AND TOTAL DISASTER, MUST END, NOW!!!”
As of now, no executive order has been published.
