Nestled in the heart of downtown McAllen, the McAllen Heritage Center stands as a testament to the rich history of the city. Recently, the Center marked its 15th Anniversary with much fanfare and celebration. In the midst of these celebrations, we had the opportunity to speak with Dr. Fred Farias, a local optometrist and a loyal supporter of preserving the community’s heritage.
Dr. Farias, a native of McAllen, has always harbored a deep appreciation for the history and culture of his city. He believes that understanding and preserving our heritage is an integral part of fostering a strong sense of community. For him, visiting the Heritage Center is a journey back in time, a chance to witness the evolution of McAllen from the early 1900s to the present day. As a former student of McAllen high school, he expressed delight in exploring the school’s history through various exhibits in the museum.
Dr. Farias remembers the iconic building housing the Heritage Center since his school days in the 1970s. Originally a post office, the structure has withstood the test of time, its enduring charm adding to the appeal of Main Street. The Center now showcases an array of artifacts and displays donated by local citizens, a collection that Dr. Farias considers a testament to the city’s commitment to preserving its rich past.
When asked about how the community could contribute to the longevity of the McAllen Heritage Center, Dr. Farias stressed the importance of fundraising and artifact donation. He voiced his confidence in the city’s ability to keep the museum thriving with the support of the local chamber and the contributions of the citizens.Dr. Farias encouraged all residents of McAllen and the valley to visit the Heritage Center.
