Bolstered by a very strong showing of support from physicians across the state, Attorney General Greg Abbott has earned the endorsement of the political arm of the Texas Medical Association (TEXPAC) in his race for governor.
“Grassroots physician backing for a candidate is one of the pillars of our endorsement process,” said TEXPAC Board of Directors Chair Jerry Hunsaker, MD. “General Abbott hit that one way out of the park.”
Dr. Hunsaker pointed out that TEXPAC previously endorsed Greg Abbott in races for district judge, the Supreme Court of Texas, and attorney general. “Physicians have been with him for decades,” Dr. Hunsaker said, “and we look forward to helping him become the next governor of this great state.”
Many Texas physicians encouraged TEXPAC to endorse General Abbott because of his long support for medical liability reform. But other reasons bubbled to the top as well.
“Greg Abbott has been a staunch supporter of patient safety, quality, and access to health care,” said Houston anesthesiologist Sherif Zaafran, MD. “In our ever-changing health care environment, we look forward to partnering with General Abbott to improve care for all Texans.”
General Abbott expressed his appreciation for the endorsement.
“For over 100 years, TMA has advocated for the improvement of public health, medical care, and the prevention and cure of disease in Texas,” he said. “As the nation’s largest state medical society, TMA’s leadership and commitment to ensure the best service to their patients and their communities surpasses the highest demands of the medical code of ethics. I’m honored to receive Texas Medical Association’s endorsement for governor. Together, we will create a superior health care environment for all Texans.”
TEXPAC speaks on behalf of more than 47,000 Texas physicians and medical students, and nearly 5,000 alliance members. Organized in 1962, TEXPAC is one of the oldest political action committees in Texas. TEXPAC also is one of the largest bipartisan PACs in the state and ranks first in size among other state medical association PACs.
