September 6, 2025—The Powerball lottery made history on September 6, 2025, when two winning tickets—one sold in Missouri and another in Texas—matched all six numbers to claim a combined $1.787 billion jackpot. According to the official Powerball website, the winning numbers were 11, 23, 44, 61, 62, with the Powerball 17 and a Power Play multiplier of 2×.

“This is the second-largest jackpot in Powerball history,” Powerball confirmed in a press release, adding that the prize is only surpassed by the 2.04 billion won in California in November 2022. The total marks the end of a 42-draw streak in which no ticket holder matched all winning numbers. The previous jackpot was claimed on May 31, 2025, in California.

Each of the Missouri and Texas ticket holders now faces a choice between receiving an estimated $410.3 million lump sum before taxes or an annuity totaling about $893.5 million over 29 or 30 years, with annual payments increasing by 5%.

The September 6 drawing also resulted in significant secondary winnings. Powerball stated that “over 9.9 million tickets won cash prizes at all levels.” Eighteen players across the country matched all five white balls to win $1 million each, while two tickets that chose Power Play doubled their prize to $2 million. In California, two $1 million-winning tickets were sold, along with dozens of lower-tier winners, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

The $1.787 billion jackpot ended months of growing anticipation. “Jackpots like this capture the public’s imagination, but the odds remain steep,” Powerball officials reminded players, noting that the chance of winning the grand prize is 1 in 292.2 million.

With the jackpot claimed, the prize pool has reset to $20 million for the next drawing on September 8. As Powerball emphasized in its statement, “Every ticket has the same chance of winning, regardless of when or where it’s purchased.”

The September 6 drawing has already made its mark in U.S. lottery history, not just because of its size but also for the wide wave of winners it generated. For the two jackpot winners, their lives have been permanently changed; for millions of other players, the hope of the next record-breaking drawing still lives on.
