PONY Softball World Series tournament qualifier to be held in Weslaco

The City of Weslaco, Weslaco PONY League, and Weslaco ISD will be hosting the annual Regional Softball Tournament June 24-June 29-2019.  Approximately 52 teams will be competing for the opportunity to qualify for the PONY South Zone Softball World Series in Louisiana at Mayor Pablo G. Peña City Park and Weslaco East High School. The top four teams in each division will qualify; there will be five age divisions competing during the regional tournament: Shetland (5-6 yrs.), Pinto (7-8 yrs.), Mustang (9-10 yrs.), Bronco (11-12 yrs.) and Pony (13-14 yrs). The Bronco and Pony divisions will be utilizing the Weslaco East Softball field while the other three divisions will be competing at Mayor Peña Park.  This will be the third consecutive year the tournament is hosted in Weslaco.

Teams from all over the Rio Grande Valley will compete, including teams from Corpus Christi, Kingsville, Bishop, and Laredo. 

Ed Sanchez, Regional PONY Softball Director, pointed out that these regional tournaments always have a positive impact on the host city’s economy.

“This tournament usually provides a big boost towards the economy to the city hosting the event, “ remarked Sanchez.  Team members and their families, he noted, stay in hotels, eat at local restaurants and shop in local stores. 

Eight softball teams from Weslaco will compete to advance to the regional tournament – Weslaco AllStars and Pink Sox in the Shetland division; 95Stix in the Pinto division; RGV Purple Crush and Weslaco Dream in the Mustang division; Xtreme Heat, Weslaco Wave and RGV Lady Katz in the Bronco division. 

Weslaco Softball Baseball, established in 1987 by A.U. Stickland, is a non-profit organization and provides Girls PONY Softball and Boys PONY Baseball in the following divisions : Shetland 4 (Teeball 4) , Shetland (Teeball 5-6), Pinto (7-8), Mustang (9-10), Bronco (11-12), Pony (13-14), Colt (15-16) and Palomino (17-18).  Weslaco Softball Baseball is comprised of community leaders that serve on the board and organize the teams, games, and scheduling for all the participants.
