Quinta Mazatlán is honored to host author Jan Seale, former Texas Poet Laureate, as she presents her new book PARTICULARS: poems of smallness, Thursday, May 6th from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm on The Back Porch at Quinta Mazatlán.
The presentation will feature readings from PARTICULARS: poems of smallness, and a discussion on the animal and plant life depicted in the poems. Jan Seale, the poet, and Ansen Seale, her son and the illustrator of the book, treat the nature lover to images such as the world’s smallest frog, mosquitoes, sparrows, blueberries, and cloves. In addition, there are poems on objects that help in everyday activities, such as paper clips, stamps, coins, and buttons.
The poet commented, “In a world of giant issues and mega-problems, we can take solace in very small pleasures, lessons, puzzles, and anomalies. It is restful to turn aside from global situations to contemplate the little details that enable and enrich our lives. There’s no need for world travel or specialized knowledge just to look closely at the small everyday objects all around us. And signs and symbols like punctuation marks and musical notation guide us carefully through expressions of language and art.”
Jan Seale, the 2012-13 Texas Poet Laureate, is a longtime resident of McAllen. Her book of poems on the flora and fauna of the Rio Grande Valley, titled Valley Ark, with illustrations by her son Ansen Seale, is a favorite among Valleyites. Seale has written trail scripts and captions for Quinta Mazatlan, as well as edited several Valley Land Fund pictorial volumes. She has taught writing at three universities and has held a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship. Books will be available for purchase and autographing after the presentation. PARTICULARS is also available at VIDA Antiques in McAllen or online from Amazon or Barnes and Noble.
