Laredo, Texas — Mayor Pete Saenz joined Council Member for District 8, Alyssa Cigarroa, to proclaim 2022 as the year of the Plaza Theatre’s 75th Anniversary. Today’s proclamation celebrated the iconic building’s 75th anniversary, preservation, and restoration. Although the City preferred to celebrate this occasion in-person, the ceremony took place virtually due to the recent spike in COVID-19 cases in the community.
Mayor Saenz and Council Member Cigarroa were joined by community partners including Able City, Webb County Heritage Foundation, and the Laredo Film Society to celebrate the Plaza Theatre. The ceremony initiated with Mayor Saenz commemorating the iconic landmark due to the fond memories it created for many in the community. He also described the vision for the future of the Plaza Theatre, such as being a multi-purposefacility that will host movie screenings, theatre plays, lectures, and more. Following Mayor Saenz, Council Member Cigarroa expressed the importance of the Plaza Theatre to the downtown area and the advocacy for its restoration. Community partners also gave remarks on its rich history and the positive effect of cinematic arts in the community.
Located in the heart of downtown, the theatre’s renovation is expected to generate activity that would further spur economic development in this area. The City of Laredo is committed to supporting a growing community of local artists that celebrate Laredo’s uniqueness and bi-national culture. The restoration of the Plaza Theatre will serve as a nostalgic cultural anchor for all residents, visitors, and local artists.
