Pharr, Texas – The City of Pharr has a new director overseeing its Parks & Recreation Department, officials announced today. After serving as Parks and Recreation Director for several years, Roel Garza is voluntarily handing over the reins of leadership at the department to his former Assistant Director, Sergio Alanis. This mutual voluntary move will allow Garza more time to focus on his family. Garza has worked at the City of Pharr for five years, beginning as Assistant Director of the Parks and Recreation Department, Director of the Police Athletic League, and then serving as Director of the Parks and Recreation Department. Prior to his tenure in Pharr, Garza worked as Parks and Recreation Director for the City of San Juan for 15 years. Under Garza’s leadership, the city’s Parks and Recreation department grew to oversee multiple functions and responsibilities. Garza will remain serving at the Parks and Recreation Department as Assistant Director, primarily handling the Tierra del Sol Golf Course and the Pharr Police Athletic League.
Alanis has worked with the City of Pharr for five years, beginning at the Pharr Police Department and serving as Parks and Recreation Assistant Director since 2012. Alanis has a degree in Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning from Texas A&M University in College Station.
Regarding his new position, Alanis stated, “”I thank the City leaders and Mr. Garza for this opportunity and for their confidence in me. “We all respect and look up to Mr. Garza as a mentor in the department and we are grateful that we will continue to have him as a resource to ensure a smooth transition.”
Garza echoed the sentiment, stating, “I leave the department is good hands and I know Sergio will do an excellent job leading the department.”
“I look forward to focusing my time on PAL and the Golf Course, and I will continue to support Sergio in every way,” he added.
Alanis takes over as Parks and Recreation Director effective immediately.
