Kudos to Dr. Ricardo J. Solis, he has been president of South Texas College just a few months and has landed a unique program to create commercial drivers. Currently, the nation needs over 100,000 new drivers. This is a classic example of South Texas College reskilling and upskilling through education and training to meet regional and local labor demands,” said Dr. Solis who brokered the partnership with Trancasa.

Trancasa CEO Carlos A. Canales Melhem, Texas Workforce Labor Commissioner Julian Alvarez, and Workforce Solutions Hidalgo County CEO Frank Almaraz joined the STC president at a press conference announcing the new CDL program. This program is the only one in the nation and soon will be duplicated in other cities withing the college and other cities throughout the nation. More in this issue.

Other good news, Congressman Henry Cuellar and Texas Senator Juan ‘Chuy’ Hinojosa support South Texas CLI and Limb Salvage Club to protect families of South Texas and the entire U.S.  Both leaders attended the inaugural dinner meeting of the not-for-profit South Texas CLI and Limb Salvage Club. They were joined by former McAllen mayor Jim Darling, Dr. Pedro Mego, McAllen Chief of Police Victor Rodriguez. Laura Warren of The Warren Group, McAllen Mayor Javier Villalobos, Brenda Enriquez, President CEO of Mission Chamber of Commerce, Ruben Ramirez, Ellie Torres, Hidalgo County Commissioner, and other leaders who have agreed to support this 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to education, the prevention of peripheral arterial disease (PAD), and preventing the thousands of unnecessary amputations taking place in the RGV.

Cost of Amputation – Emotional. The people that go through a limb loss experience have significantly lower health status. According to 26-31 Studies, Leg Amputation prognosis estimates the 5-year mortality rate for people with an amputation to be between 50% and 74%.

On another note, as part of their commitment to continue providing life-changing opportunities for all students, Pharr-San Juan-Alamo ISD (PSJA ISD) School Board of Trustees signed a Memorandum of Understanding with South Texas College (STC) to further solidify the district’s current partnership.
