Texas Border Business LA VILLA – Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush will be among the speakers at a major drainage project groundbreaking in the Delta area at 10 a.m.Thursday in La Villa. Hidalgo County Precinct 1 Commissioner A.C. Cuellar Jr. – who is hosting the groundbreaking for the Delta Area Connector/East Lateral Project at ½ mile West of FM 491 on Hwy 107 in La Villa – said the project is a joint effort between his office, the Urban County Program, Drainage District No.1 and the Texas General Land Office The $15 million project will provide drainage improvements to more than 56 square miles within Precinct 1 that is populated by approximately 55,000 residents. Once completed, urban areas within eastern Hidalgo County served by the Mercedes Lateral drainage system will be interconnected to the Main Floodwater Channel providing seven miles of immediate drainage relief to 15 rural communities, said Cuellar. “We now have the ability to address the flood impact associated with Hurricane Dolly,” said Cuellar. “This project will offer long term drainage improvements that will help serve distressed areas for years to come.” The project – which will be completed in three phases – is partially funded from Disaster Recovery grants received by the Urban County Program for damages from Hurricane Dolly. The Texas General Land Office serves as the lead state agency for managing Disaster Recovery Grants appropriated through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
