Laredo College has obtained the honor to house one of A. M. Bruni’s memorable displays in the foyer area of the Ft. McIntosh Harold R. Yeary Library and Executive Conference Center. The Lamar Bruni Vergara Trust has entrusted these significant pieces to our institution for generations to enjoy.

The LBV Trust has selected LC to house personal A. M. Bruni artifacts that depict his life. Some of these heirlooms that have remained in the Bruni & Martin families include a replica of the original livestock branding iron, a painting of the original drilling derek at his ranch, his portrait and a digital kiosk. To honor his legacy and reminisce on his numerous contributions to the advancement of our community, a dedication ceremony took place on Nov. 17, 2021.

Longtime rancher, entrepreneur, business leader and philanthropist, A.M. Bruni was born on Sept. 19, 1856, in Bozzi, Emilia-Romagna, Italy. After his parents passed away, he moved to San Antonio to live with his uncle Antonio Bruni. Five years later, Bruni relocated to Laredo and opened a mercantile store with his brother Luigi, where he acquired an interest in the sheep and cattle industries. In 1879, he married Consolacion Henry and fathered nine children.

Bruni was appointed as Webb County Tax Assessor Collector, County Commissioner and County Treasurer. Bruni was also First National Bank of Laredo Vice President, Texas-Mexican Railway Director and Border Gas Company Director. As proprietor of expansive lands in Webb and Zapata counties, he founded a town named Bruni.

A.M. Bruni has left a legacy that will remain for decades. Generations of Bruni have made an impact in many people’s lives through the support of organizations. Hence, the creation of the Lamar Bruni Vergara Trust.

The Trust was established in 1989 after Lamar Bruni Vergara, a Laredoan who spent much of her life becoming acquainted with the city and expressing her sincere interest in the community’s welfare. Bruni Vergara entrusted her family member to work diligently to carry on her legacy. In carrying out her wishes, the Trust supports religious, health, educational and local entities to advance their mission.

The LBV Trust has been a staunch supporter of LC and the community. The institution appreciates the continuous support and generosity which has enabled many Laredoans to achieve their goals and dreams through quality education.
