BROWNSVILLE, Texas – Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-34)announced $1,563,181 for the Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This funding was made available through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law’s Airport Infrastructure Grant program, which Congressman Gonzalez proudly supported.
The grant adds to the over $9 million Congressman Gonzalez announced in 2024 to fund Phase 2 of the reconstruction of 6,000 feet of existing paved Runway 18/36. The project will ensure the runway meets modern safety standards and can accommodate future growth at the airport, improving both efficiency and safety for passenger and cargo flights.
“The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law continues to invest in South Texas by supporting the modernization of our airports,” said Congressman Gonzalez. “The City of Brownsville and our entire region are quickly growing and our infrastructure – our roads, bridges, highways, and airports – must expand and improve to accommodate the needs of South Texans. In this new year, I will work with the incoming administration and state and local stakeholders to continue delivering for our community and ensure funding continues to flow.”
“The forthcoming investment to the Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport is invaluable to our City and region as it will enhance the airport’s infrastructure, ensuring the safety and efficiency of both passenger and cargo flights,” said John Cowen, Jr., Brownsville City Mayor. “As our City and region continue to grow, modernizing our airport is crucial to meet the increasing demands of travelers and businesses. This funding is a welcome boost for our local economy and a vital step in preparing Brownsville for the future.”
