Texas Border Business
Special to Texas Border Business
The annual State of the Union is more than a tradition; it is a bridge between the President and the American people.
On February 24, President Trump will address our nation to reflect on the landmark accomplishments from the first year of his second term. As leaders from every branch of government gather in the House Chamber, I look forward to reflecting on a historic year – one that has put America back on the path to prosperity.
Joining me in the Chamber this year as my guest is Command Sergeant Major (Ret.) John Herring from Alice, Texas. It is an honor to bring a Texas Veteran, father, and community leader to the Capitol to witness this moment firsthand.
For CSM (R) Herring, the legislative wins of the past year are more than just headlines; they are his reality. On his own land, he has seen a tangible difference: secure border policies have significantly reduced trespassing. At home, the impact is just as clear – the historic tax relief we delivered provided his wife’s small business the critical breathing room needed to thrive.
His story is a testament to the real results our work in Congress is delivering for Texas families. Last summer, the Republican majority delivered the largest tax cut in history. The One Big Beautiful Bill ensures that hard-earned dollars stay in your pocket. The effects of this milestone are coming to homes across our country as Americans, like the Herrings, file their taxes this season.
We have tailored tax cuts for every stage of life. For young families, we boosted the Child Tax Credit. For the hardworking young adults, we eliminated taxes on tips and overtime. For our seniors, we ended the tax on Social Security and added a $6,000 deduction to help retirement savings go further. By making these cuts permanent, we blocked a 22% tax hike that would have devastated South Texas families.
The wins of the last year stand in contrast to the previous administration. For four years under the Biden administration, South Texans dealt with skyrocketing inflation, unaffordable mortgage rates, and a wide-open border. Today, we are seeing a seismic shift. We have the most secure border in history, mortgage rates are trending down, and inflation has dropped by over 6 percentage points.
When President Trump stands before Congress, he will not just be speaking to politicians; he will be speaking to the families across Texas’s 15th District as we welcome the Golden Age of America.
